VP3 has a tendency to blur images, a tendency that their engineering folks admit to but which allows it to provide the appearance of high quality.

Im not insinuating anything, Ive just never seen Sorensen look that bad in the real world.

They do make a big deal about QT and it being the basis of MPEG4, so why arent they further along with it in QT.

Could you tell us what settings you are using in Sorenson 3 Also, if you are setting a data rate limit in Sorenson 3, try instead setting a quality limit and trying to get the same file size(quality of 40 maybe - Im not sure).

I got conflicting statements where ive heard that 3vix is based on the Apple MPEG4 standard and the other that 3vix is based on the OpenDivx project which is based on Divx;-) (based on Msofts rejected MPEG4 specs).

Whats the real deal Anway MPEG4 is meant for streaming at low bitrates and decent quality unlike what MPEG 2 is for.

So what do i know If anyone can provide the real story Id be grateful.

The MPEG-4 I made the quality a bit too low, it came out at like 2.4MB and definitely not looking great, but still looked better than your Sorenson3 one.

The Sorenson3 one I did came out at 3.7MB and looked almost as good as the VP3 one(granted somewhat bigger file, but also this is reencoding an already encoded source).

Try compressing w Sorenson3 like I told you w the quality settings around 45-50.

VP3 has much lower decode requirements than SV3, is open source (kinda), is free and is faster to encode than SV3 (generally speaking).

FYI, MPEG4 in any form will not look as good as the top codecs available now.

Not that its bad just that it isnt as good as WMV8, SV3 or VP4.

Edited in Premiere, deinterlacing, levels and smoothing done with VirtualDub, noise reduction, sharpening, cropping, resizing and final compression done in Cleaner 5.1.

VBR was used for SV3 and 1 pass VBR was used for VP3.

Datarate is lower than ideal to highlight flaws in the codec.

But SV3 seems to be sharper too, like you can see the patterns on the bras more clearly compared to the VP3.

The scroll wheel helps with moving through frames and looking for similar ones to compare quality.

Sorenson 3 has this annoying tendency to boost the contrast, lower the gamma and blow out highlights.

So what you see as lacking in the VP3 codec is simply because the source footage needed some contrast.
